Detox Your Home! 5 Easy Homemade Cleaners

From time to time we have all come across articles about the negative side effects of chemicals in our household products. Triclosan is found in antibacterial soap, which is now known to cause thyroid disruption. Some fragrances in disinfectants and air fresheners are known to be carcinogens and endocrine disruptors, which can cause cancer. Phosphates are found in laundry detergent, which causes indoor air pollution. These warnings are often ignored, as we think to ourselves, ‘It’s not clean unless it smells like chemicals, right?’ And besides, what are the alternatives?

With that question in mind, we went out and did some research and found there are people out there making homemade cleaning products to reduce chemicals in their homes. By using a few simple, common, and inexpensive ingredients in different combinations, they’re just as effective as the store-bought versions. One of the easiest cleaning solutions of vinegar-and-water has been proven to kill 90 percent of bacteria on surfaces.

Convinced, and needing to do some spring-cleaning, we decided to join in and make our own healthy, chemical-free cleaning products – and save some money in the process. Here are 5 favorite recipes for you to try:

All-Purpose Cleaner

Add 1 part white vinegar and 8 parts water to a spray bottle. Shake to mix. Spray onto surface and wipe down; if surface is greasy or stained, sprinkle on some baking soda as well.

Window Cleaner

Add 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water to a spray bottle. Shake to mix.

Air Freshener

Add 2 tbsp rubbing alcohol, 1/2 cup water, and 20 drops of your favorite essential oil to a spray bottle. Shake to mix.

Wood Polish

Strain the juice of 1 lemon into a small lidded container. Add 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp water. Tighten lid and shake until mixed. Dip cloth into mixture to use.

Laundry Detergent

Mix 1 cup grated castile soap, 1 cup washing soda, and 1 cup borax in a lidded container. (An oatmeal canister works perfectly.) Use 2 tablespoons with every load of laundry.
